00:00:00.059 --> 00:00:04.527
Hi friends, I'm Beth McMullen and I'm Lisa Schmid, and we're the co-hosts of Writers with Wrinkles.

00:00:04.527 --> 00:00:07.068
This is season three, episode 23.

00:00:07.068 --> 00:00:26.588
And today we're talking about a whole bunch of odds and ends, starting with the platform challenge that begins June 1st, and then we're gonna talk a little bit about some of Lisa's book events that are coming up to celebrate her forthcoming release, and then we're gonna talk to you a little bit about some scheduling stuff.

00:00:26.588 --> 00:00:27.650
So doesn't that sound fun?

00:00:27.650 --> 00:00:28.942
Don't you want to hang out with us now?

00:00:28.942 --> 00:00:30.885
I want to hang out with us.

00:00:30.885 --> 00:00:42.561
Okay, so before we get into the you know, before we get into the stuff, we were talking a little bit before I hit record about the summer slump.

00:00:42.843 --> 00:00:45.213
Do any of you guys experience the summer slump?

00:00:45.213 --> 00:00:50.689
Can you define summer slump for our guests, our listeners, not our guests, our listeners?

00:00:50.689 --> 00:01:01.284
I think so many times when we hit summer, things just start happening Vacations, kids are out of school, the weather's nice, you want to get outdoors and it's.

00:01:01.284 --> 00:01:20.180
I think it's hard to like hunker down in your dark, you know writing cave and get to work and and it's funny because usually summer is when I I do better with writing, and I think it's because I don't have to worry about my son's grades or you know what's going on or you know whatever.

00:01:20.180 --> 00:01:23.748
So for me it's I don't really have a summer slump, I think.

00:01:23.748 --> 00:01:29.445
I'm like I'm in a slump all the time.

00:01:29.445 --> 00:01:32.730
It's not seasonal, it's permanent.

00:01:32.730 --> 00:01:37.263
Yeah, seriously, I, that's something that I relate to pretty well right now.

00:01:37.263 --> 00:01:38.507
You know what You're.

00:01:38.507 --> 00:01:39.993
You're really good about.

00:01:39.993 --> 00:01:43.524
You know setting your mind to a book and sitting down and writing it.

00:01:43.524 --> 00:01:45.947
You're very structured and I admire that about you.

00:01:45.947 --> 00:02:04.811
And if I'm like, like lately I just haven't been inspired and I was talking to you earlier before we started recording is I've really struggled with this book and I wonder if people go through this as well I'm sure they do I just couldn't get, I couldn't quite nail the inspiration about what my character story arc was Like.

00:02:04.870 --> 00:02:08.748
I was writing a story but I was just I kept thinking like what's his emotional journey?

00:02:08.748 --> 00:02:10.001
Cause he doesn't have like a.

00:02:10.001 --> 00:02:13.711
Really I didn't want to give him anxiety or you know all those things.

00:02:13.711 --> 00:02:18.133
I just wanted him to solve a mystery, but in doing so it wasn't working for me.

00:02:18.133 --> 00:02:32.010
Apparently, I'm an angsty person and I want him to have sort of emotional growth, and so I can't just write that straight mystery without, like him, having to, like, overcome something.

00:02:32.010 --> 00:02:54.973
And so I finally, I couldn't figure out what it was, and I couldn't, I wasn't inspired to sit down and write, and I was struggling with the story and it finally dawned on me you know what his arc was, or what his angst was that he's a lonely kid, he's, you know, the son of a single parent, and that he's at home all the time alone because she has to work.

00:02:54.973 --> 00:02:57.788
And so I'm like, okay, I can relate to that, you know.

00:02:57.788 --> 00:03:00.650
And so now I have something to tap into.

00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:12.449
And so I think, if you're struggling with a story and you're not feeling inspired, I think it's time to look at your character and say, are you relating to that character and do you care what happens to them?

00:03:12.449 --> 00:03:18.747
Because I was kind of like, yeah, I kind of don't care what happens to him, and that's the problem.

00:03:18.747 --> 00:03:22.174
I just, I was just like I hope he figures it out.

00:03:22.174 --> 00:03:40.844
You know, it is a problem, because if you don't want to spend time with them, then you don't spend time with them, and then it turns into your summertime slump, because you're just thinking of all sorts of excuses not to do the work right, like I would rather do anything than spend time with this character, who I find uninspiring.

00:03:40.844 --> 00:03:44.087
And you got to figure.

00:03:44.087 --> 00:03:50.430
If you, the author, find the character uninspiring, then the readers are going to read three pages and just like Nope.

00:03:50.430 --> 00:03:51.621
I did that with the book.

00:03:51.621 --> 00:03:53.145
I'm not going to tell you what it's called.

00:03:53.145 --> 00:03:58.325
It's pink as a pink cover, but like every single book seems to have a pink cover these days.

00:03:58.325 --> 00:04:03.407
And I read about 20 pages and I thought to myself this character, I just don't care.

00:04:03.407 --> 00:04:06.907
I don't care what happens there, I'm uninterested in what happens here.

00:04:06.907 --> 00:04:09.449
And I gave it away to somebody else.

00:04:09.449 --> 00:04:10.263
I did tell them.

00:04:10.263 --> 00:04:11.747
I said this did not work for me.

00:04:11.747 --> 00:04:12.865
Maybe it'll work for you.

00:04:12.865 --> 00:04:14.302
And it's just.

00:04:14.383 --> 00:04:17.732
I love the concept of my character that he's totally into gaming.

00:04:17.732 --> 00:04:20.970
But I couldn't like why is he into gaming?

00:04:20.970 --> 00:04:25.826
Like that was his problem, like he was too into gaming, but why was he there in the first place?

00:04:25.826 --> 00:04:27.790
And I hadn't nailed that down.

00:04:27.790 --> 00:04:36.983
And so all of a sudden I'm like there it is and it I like just had written in a sentence, and then that kind of triggered something and so now I care about him.

00:04:36.983 --> 00:04:48.507
But honestly, friends, if you don't care about your character, nobody else will so find something to connect, and it's usually something that's personal, that resonates with you and that resonates with me.

00:04:48.507 --> 00:04:51.682
You know being that kid at home alone, and so I get that.

00:04:51.682 --> 00:04:56.220
So now I finally have something and it's not anxiety or it's just a, it's a condition.

00:04:56.220 --> 00:05:02.961
Now you like him again, I do, I'm interested in him and I want him to get back out into the world and not be lonely anymore.

00:05:02.961 --> 00:05:04.906
So it that is.

00:05:04.966 --> 00:05:12.970
My big advice today is find, make sure that you're resonating with your character, and if you're having trouble writing, that may be why?

00:05:12.970 --> 00:05:14.305
Look, it's a good point.

00:05:14.305 --> 00:05:15.767
I'm doing this at.

00:05:15.767 --> 00:05:17.980
Well, you guys are going to hear about this a lot in the future.

00:05:17.980 --> 00:05:26.920
I'm doing this certification for book coaching through the author accelerator, which is actually really fun and quite a bit of work.

00:05:26.920 --> 00:05:29.307
Surprise to me, not surprise to me.

00:05:29.307 --> 00:05:30.550
It shouldn't be a surprise.

00:05:30.550 --> 00:05:35.077
I should have known it, but I always do these things and then I'm like, wow, this is a lot of work.

00:05:35.077 --> 00:05:50.108
Anyway, it's really fun, but something that keeps coming up in when we're talking about the outlining process, or what they call blueprinting your novel before you jump into writing it, which is something I'm very, very bad at.

00:05:50.108 --> 00:05:53.850
So it's been a good lesson for me to try and learn.

00:05:54.040 --> 00:05:55.266
Is that why?

00:05:55.266 --> 00:05:58.589
Why, in all the ways that you can think about it?

00:05:58.589 --> 00:06:01.470
Why is the character doing what he's doing?

00:06:01.470 --> 00:06:02.805
In your case, he's a gamer.

00:06:02.805 --> 00:06:04.009
Why is he a gamer?

00:06:04.009 --> 00:06:21.144
So, all of these opportunities to question why something is happening the way it is, I think it's something that that, if you are stuck, is a really good way to go to the page and say, okay, why am I, why is this person here doing this?

00:06:21.144 --> 00:06:22.547
Why did this event happen?

00:06:22.547 --> 00:06:27.603
And it has to be deliberate, like your here doing this, why did this event happen?

00:06:27.603 --> 00:06:35.144
And it has to be deliberate, like your choices in writing the novel have to be deliberate, or you just end up with a big mess that you have to try and untangle later and that's not fun.

00:06:35.144 --> 00:06:36.769
That is not fun.

00:06:36.769 --> 00:06:39.500
And I'm more than halfway through this book.

00:06:39.500 --> 00:06:54.911
And so, once they made that determination, it's like, okay, I just need to go in, like chapter by chapter, and make some tiny tweaks, like it's nothing horrendous, thankfully, so I can feed in that emotional angst that he's going through.

00:06:54.911 --> 00:06:57.668
And then I already have the last line.

00:06:57.668 --> 00:07:03.348
Now, like I know what the last line is and so I never, you know, I knew how it was ending.

00:07:03.348 --> 00:07:10.642
But I now, all of a sudden, I'm like okay, now I know exactly where he's going, I know why he's going there and I know why he.

00:07:10.642 --> 00:07:30.711
He was where he was at the beginning Because at the beginning it was just like you know, I was thinking about all the kids who are so obsessed with gaming now because they got stuck in the house during COVID, but I didn't want to bring that up, so I just I couldn't think of another reason why he would be gaming all the time and I'm just like that's so obvious.

00:07:30.711 --> 00:07:31.822
How did I not think of that?

00:07:31.822 --> 00:07:35.254
So that's, that's my big Don't.

00:07:35.293 --> 00:07:42.016
You feel sometimes that you have to spend a certain amount of time with the character before you figure them out.

00:07:42.016 --> 00:07:53.702
I mean, my problem is that I struggle to understand the protagonist when I first start writing something, because it's like you meet somebody for the first time and you don't really know them.

00:07:53.702 --> 00:08:03.805
You have to go about the process of getting to know them in various ways and hanging out with them and doing stuff together and blah, blah, blah, and I feel sort of like that's the same thing with the character.

00:08:03.805 --> 00:08:18.723
You have to spend some time with them in whatever way possible, either writing chapters or thinking in your head or whatever it is and then you start to unravel what their motivation is for the things that they've done and what challenges they're facing.

00:08:18.723 --> 00:08:29.793
So I think it's good that you figured it out, rather than getting to the end and being like, nope, I still don't like this person, and now I don't have to make up excuses to you.

00:08:29.793 --> 00:08:32.264
Still I haven't been writing Right.

00:08:32.284 --> 00:08:36.283
Because when I say to Lisa, did you write today and don't you lie to me?

00:08:36.283 --> 00:08:37.706
And she goes completely silent.

00:08:37.706 --> 00:08:39.471
I know that she hasn't done anything.

00:08:39.471 --> 00:08:42.690
That's the tell, that's your tell, that's my tell the silence.

00:08:42.690 --> 00:08:45.561
When I can see you going, what am I going to say?

00:08:45.561 --> 00:08:58.585
You know, I'm such a slow writer, as I've talked about before, and I just it doesn't matter, like if I was slow before, I'm working backwards right now.

00:08:58.585 --> 00:09:02.404
I'm so slow Like I just I can't like even write a paragraph.

00:09:02.404 --> 00:09:06.485
I'm like I just wasn't into it, it was sad.

00:09:06.485 --> 00:09:08.402
I'm like I'm never getting another book deal.

00:09:08.402 --> 00:09:17.562
I might as well just, you know, get ahold of my agent and say find somebody else.

00:09:17.562 --> 00:09:18.565
You know, oh, my God, it's nothing like that.

00:09:18.565 --> 00:09:19.467
This is a good book, it's going to sell.

00:09:19.467 --> 00:09:26.948
It's fun, and now that you've figured out the motivation for the character to behave, to be behaving the way he is, all the better, right?

00:09:26.948 --> 00:09:31.917
Yeah, we need motivation, we do.

00:09:31.937 --> 00:09:44.581
Okay, talking speaking about motivation, dear listeners, we are right on the verge of beginning the platform building challenge that we talked about in I think it was episode 19.

00:09:44.581 --> 00:09:54.365
So if you have no idea what we're talking about, go back and listen to episode 19 for all the details, but a brief recap.

00:09:54.365 --> 00:10:08.749
So this is a challenge to you that lasts the month of June to help you build your author platform so that, when you're done, you have something solid, something that looks like something.

00:10:08.749 --> 00:10:15.985
Obviously, you don't need a platform, but they really can help you and this is an easy way to like get going on it.

00:10:15.985 --> 00:10:21.849
This is going to be a fun and collaborative activity, so you won't feel lonely.

00:10:21.849 --> 00:10:29.403
You won't feel like Lisa's lonely character gaming all the time, because you're going to have friends out there doing this with you.

00:10:29.403 --> 00:10:32.850
I'm doing it, lisa's doing it, the show is doing it, everybody's doing it.

00:10:33.596 --> 00:10:39.700
Can you talk a little bit about where everyone is going to be able to find the daily platform building tasks?

00:10:39.700 --> 00:10:45.356
Yes, so there's going to be a couple places that folks can go out there and just to kind of touch on it.

00:10:45.356 --> 00:10:49.562
We talked about it last time, but it'll be things like do you have a website?

00:10:49.562 --> 00:10:55.816
Like, if you don't, think, maybe take that you know portion of it and work on your website.

00:10:55.816 --> 00:11:07.863
Or, and then I'll have like whatever forms in social media you're on things to do, things to post, that will help you get some followers and build your community online.

00:11:07.863 --> 00:11:10.365
Get some followers and build your community online.

00:11:10.385 --> 00:11:14.831
And so there's going to be 31 different tasks to do throughout the month.

00:11:14.831 --> 00:11:22.534
But it's up to you to kind of pick and choose the ones that are going to work for you and what kind of lines up with what your goals are.

00:11:22.534 --> 00:11:27.267
And so we're working in association with the fabulous Bitsy Kemper.

00:11:27.267 --> 00:11:30.504
She has the platform challenge.

00:11:30.504 --> 00:11:33.802
It's a 31-day platform challenge that's already up on the website.

00:11:33.802 --> 00:11:47.101
So you can we'll be referring to that you can go check it out and see what kind of an overview she has the whole month listed as far as what you need to do and what you can plan ahead for.

00:11:47.101 --> 00:11:54.201
So that is a good starting point to check that out that every day we will be reminding you.

00:11:54.500 --> 00:12:06.846
This is what you're supposed to do today, and and our goal is to help everyone get some type of platform, and I know that not everyone wants to have like a million followers, but you do need something.

00:12:06.846 --> 00:12:11.865
Whether you're going to be self-published or traditionally published, people need to know where to find you.

00:12:11.865 --> 00:12:24.797
Yeah, that's really true, and just doing it tiny little bit by tiny little bit makes it way less stressful than thinking, oh, I have to build an entire platform, forget it, I'm not doing that, it's too much.

00:12:24.797 --> 00:12:31.067
So this is a way to chip away at, kind of the big idea of building a platform.

00:12:31.067 --> 00:12:40.950
So we are going to cover a lot of the social media feeds, so we will be on Twitter, facebook, instagram.

00:12:40.950 --> 00:12:54.654
I'm going to put it on threads because I'm over there too, so you'll see it no matter where you are, and we would love for people to jump on in and tell us what they're doing to fulfill the task on a daily basis.

00:12:54.816 --> 00:12:57.692
If you have something clever that you're doing that you think this is great.

00:12:57.692 --> 00:12:58.756
I think it could help people.

00:12:58.756 --> 00:13:00.482
Please be sharing that.

00:13:00.482 --> 00:13:02.923
It gets people inspired.

00:13:02.923 --> 00:13:10.528
This is also a really good way to find people to follow who are kind of in the same universe that you are.

00:13:10.528 --> 00:13:14.869
It's a great way to build up your followers and to find other people to follow.

00:13:14.869 --> 00:13:16.695
So, you know, social media.

00:13:16.936 --> 00:13:32.240
I think there are those days when I am so uninspired and don't feel like doing anything and I'll go onto social media and I followed enough people who are kind of doing the same thing I'm doing, and I'll inevitably find somebody who is saying something that kind of gets me going again.

00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:41.447
So it's good for it's good for that, and I just really like the idea that we're going to all do it together, because I'm very motivated by that.

00:13:41.447 --> 00:13:42.956
Well it is.

00:13:42.956 --> 00:13:51.996
It's like, you know, it's like community effort and we want everyone to use community effort and we want everyone to use.

00:13:51.996 --> 00:14:00.741
If you do something, use the hashtag wwwplatformchallenge to like this when you post, so that other people who are doing this and you can build that community too.

00:14:00.741 --> 00:14:04.996
You can search that hashtag, find out who else is doing it, follow them.

00:14:04.996 --> 00:14:11.999
Hopefully they'll follow you back, and so it's just another community building roadmap.

00:14:12.539 --> 00:14:17.494
And also there is that sense that you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

00:14:17.494 --> 00:14:25.057
People are really smart and they come up with smart things to do that you'll look at and say, oh yeah, I can totally do that.

00:14:25.057 --> 00:14:29.168
So then you don't have to come up with the idea, think it through totally do that.

00:14:29.168 --> 00:14:31.572
So then you don't have to come up with the idea, think it through, create it.

00:14:31.572 --> 00:14:37.962
You can just piggyback on somebody else's smarts and benefit from what they've done by doing it yourself.

00:14:37.962 --> 00:14:38.465
So you know less work.

00:14:38.485 --> 00:14:41.274
I think the idea is that all of these things are going to.

00:14:41.274 --> 00:14:51.048
Some of them are going to be a little bit more time intensive, maybe some are actually more long-term for you, depending on where you are in your platform, but some of them are going to be really easy.

00:14:51.048 --> 00:14:54.065
You can just knock it off in a little bit of time and then it's done.

00:14:54.065 --> 00:14:54.416
And you've.

00:14:54.416 --> 00:14:55.520
You've done that thing.

00:14:55.520 --> 00:14:57.201
You've taken one step forward.

00:14:57.355 --> 00:15:05.022
I am a huge proponent of the micro goals small, small steps, baby step toward what you want and you will get there.

00:15:05.022 --> 00:15:09.775
If you're looking at the huge picture of I don't have a platform will get there.

00:15:09.775 --> 00:15:12.828
If you're looking at the huge picture of I don't have a platform, I need a platform, you're just going to freak yourself out.

00:15:12.828 --> 00:15:13.711
We don't want to freak anybody out.

00:15:13.711 --> 00:15:15.817
So join us, it will be fun.

00:15:15.817 --> 00:15:17.302
It will be fun.

00:15:17.883 --> 00:15:23.515
So that launches June 1st, it is a 31 day platform building challenge.

00:15:23.515 --> 00:15:28.605
I do realize that June only has 30 days, but just think of that extra day as a bonus.

00:15:28.605 --> 00:15:33.484
So we're giving, we are overselling, we're giving you more than you've even asked for.

00:15:33.484 --> 00:15:38.686
Just you know, cause that's the kind of people we are and that's how we roll, so we do Okay.

00:15:38.686 --> 00:15:47.344
So we also have very exciting book release of Heart and Souls, lisa's middle grade novel, coming out soon.

00:15:47.344 --> 00:15:50.190
So I want her to tell you where she's going to be.

00:15:50.190 --> 00:15:54.243
So if you are at any of these places, you can connect.

00:15:54.563 --> 00:15:57.936
Today's episode is really about connecting, isn't it?

00:15:57.936 --> 00:16:02.544
You know, it's hard to believe that it's coming out in two months.

00:16:02.544 --> 00:16:18.922
And, yeah, I think the book world moves so slow and I think I signed the contract for this book like two and a half years ago I mean, it was, it was a long time ago and I remember when they gave me update I was just like oh my God, that's.

00:16:18.922 --> 00:16:20.667
You know, that's a long way away.

00:16:20.667 --> 00:16:34.361
Shocking reality for people who are not in the publishing universe to realize that literal years go by in between signing your book contract and seeing your book on the shelf.

00:16:34.361 --> 00:16:43.702
I'm working with somebody doing the practicums for my book coaching certification and I had to explain that very thing.

00:16:43.702 --> 00:16:55.525
This is a long, slow, somewhat arduous process and if you expect to be sell the book and two weeks later it's in all the bookstores, then you're living in a fantasy world.

00:16:55.525 --> 00:17:04.002
Every time I see a movie where they're they have such absurd things like I'm going to go meet with my publisher and then my book is out in like a second.

00:17:04.002 --> 00:17:16.067
It's like no, it is a very, very slow moving world and it is funny to think that it was that has been so long and it was a very long process.

00:17:16.067 --> 00:17:22.321
But now you're here, you're like staring down, I know, and so I'm super excited about that.

00:17:22.422 --> 00:17:31.068
So I do have my book launch party coming up at Ruby's and Folsom July 27th, with my dear friend Beth McMullen will be in conversation.

00:17:31.068 --> 00:17:33.423
We're going to be there together.

00:17:33.423 --> 00:17:39.462
I kind of want to record it and turn it into a podcast or live stream or something I think we're going to.

00:17:39.462 --> 00:17:46.386
I think my son's girlfriend is going to do it for us, so we'll get her to record it and maybe we'll put it up as an actual video.

00:17:46.386 --> 00:17:52.007
Yeah, it'll be fun, so that people can see what we look like and then they'll be like wow, you guys really are wrinkly, holy cow.

00:17:53.435 --> 00:18:06.559
And can I just say as a side note, the other day when I saw you in person, I was like I'm going to get Botox on my forehead because I've got this horrible like I've got frowny lines in between my eyebrows and you are such a buzzkill.

00:18:06.559 --> 00:18:10.508
You're like, oh so when you get poison shot into your forehead, I'm like, well, now I'm not doing it.

00:18:10.508 --> 00:18:15.076
Side note, listeners, there are no frowny lines on her face Again.

00:18:15.076 --> 00:18:17.742
She's living in that publishing fantasy world.

00:18:17.742 --> 00:18:19.086
It's so funny.

00:18:19.086 --> 00:18:22.075
I'm like, when you put it that way, I'm certainly not doing it.

00:18:22.075 --> 00:18:31.789
No, I think what I told you was make sure you go to somebody reputable, because there's bad Botox going around and people are ending up in the hospital.

00:18:31.789 --> 00:18:34.903
I'm not doing like back alley Botox for you.

00:18:34.903 --> 00:18:37.201
Okay, bernie decided against it.

00:18:37.201 --> 00:18:40.925
Like right, when you said that, I was like that really doesn't sound that good.

00:18:40.925 --> 00:18:42.499
I can live with my wrinkles.

00:18:42.499 --> 00:18:43.801
You've already done your parade.

00:18:43.801 --> 00:18:44.884
That wasn't good.

00:18:44.884 --> 00:18:46.876
Now you know what you snapped me back into.

00:18:46.876 --> 00:18:56.989
You know common sense, yes, so, anyway, so, and I was going to do that, because I'm like I'm going to ALA and nobody needs to see my brownie lines and do you have your ALA schedules?

00:18:56.989 --> 00:18:58.020
It's so funny.

00:18:58.102 --> 00:19:08.130
So I fly in on my actual birthday, which is June 28th, so I fly in San Diego on my birthday, so I will be in San Diego looking for somebody to hang with.

00:19:08.130 --> 00:19:10.989
Ok, people, this is where you have to step up.

00:19:10.989 --> 00:19:16.751
If anybody's at ALA on June 28th, please find Lisa and wish her a happy birthday.

00:19:16.751 --> 00:19:19.221
I'm not going to be there, so I'm going to have to just text her, and that's not as fun.

00:19:19.221 --> 00:19:22.851
I'm wandering around by myself and so you know what.

00:19:22.851 --> 00:19:26.321
I have some friends down there, so hopefully I can like hook up with them.

00:19:26.321 --> 00:19:27.843
My good friend, tara is down there.

00:19:28.743 --> 00:19:37.730
So, but on Saturday and Sunday I'm doing two signings, one on Saturday, one on Sunday and then I'm also doing a panel discussion.

00:19:37.730 --> 00:19:42.913
So and it should be a really fun discussion it's not so spooky middle grade novels.

00:19:42.913 --> 00:19:47.817
So I will be there with a few other authors talking about that subject.

00:19:47.817 --> 00:19:48.657
That's awesome.

00:19:48.657 --> 00:19:54.390
So, people, if you're going to be at ALA, it sounds like it's going to be super fun.

00:19:54.390 --> 00:19:56.059
There are a lot of cool people that are going to be there, lisa included.

00:19:56.059 --> 00:20:02.686
So please find her and go to her event and buy the book and I'll be in there geeking out.

00:20:02.940 --> 00:20:08.741
You know how I am around other authors, so I'll be like, ooh, you know, running around talking to everyone, they're going to be escorting you to the door.

00:20:08.741 --> 00:20:12.266
They'll be like too much fanning, you're too much fan girl.

00:20:12.266 --> 00:20:17.711
Well, I just got an email from them saying you need to get on and do something.

00:20:17.711 --> 00:20:21.215
You're a speaker or whatever and I was like, oh my God, I'm legit.

00:20:21.215 --> 00:20:29.173
So I went on and it's basically they ask you to sign a waiver saying that you're not going to do like, you're going to behave appropriately.

00:20:29.173 --> 00:20:30.664
It seems easy enough.

00:20:30.664 --> 00:20:32.762
So I'm like, yes, I promise to be a good girl.

00:20:32.762 --> 00:20:34.865
So, appropriately, it seems easy enough.

00:20:34.865 --> 00:20:36.969
So I'm like, yes, I promise to be a good girl.

00:20:36.969 --> 00:20:37.450
So that's happening.

00:20:37.470 --> 00:20:38.411
And then I got the Kirkus review.

00:20:38.411 --> 00:20:47.960
Everybody worries about Kirkus reviews, myself included.

00:20:47.960 --> 00:20:48.740
I've seen some really snarky reviews.

00:20:48.740 --> 00:20:50.564
They like really dish it up, and so they were really kind to me for all the Oxley.

00:20:50.564 --> 00:21:00.681
And so I've just kind of been bracing myself for heart and souls and I just got it last week and I'm pleased to say it was a good review and it is live right now.

00:21:00.681 --> 00:21:09.585
So if you want to see my review, go to kirkus and check on heart and souls and you can see what they had to say about it, which makes me very happy.

00:21:09.585 --> 00:21:12.849
I can can breathe again, you can exhale.

00:21:12.849 --> 00:21:15.674
Yeah, it's very nerve wracking.

00:21:15.674 --> 00:21:17.458
It's really nerve wracking.

00:21:17.458 --> 00:21:22.248
It's really nerve wracking and it's utterly beyond your control.

00:21:22.248 --> 00:21:31.085
Right, you've done everything you can do and then it's up to them and honestly, sometimes you feel like, okay, this person's just having a bad day or didn't have their coffee or whatever.

00:21:31.546 --> 00:21:34.220
So my middle grade novels and I wrote seven of them.

00:21:34.220 --> 00:21:37.468
They were all really well reviewed by Kirkus.

00:21:37.468 --> 00:21:39.913
They were digging me in that space.

00:21:39.913 --> 00:21:49.583
And then I went and I looked at my very first adult novel and it was like a fine review, but it wasn't great.

00:21:49.583 --> 00:21:54.671
And then I couldn't remember if I had ever looked at it.

00:21:54.671 --> 00:21:57.075
I don't remember looking at it.

00:21:57.075 --> 00:21:59.268
I probably didn't even know it was a thing.

00:21:59.268 --> 00:22:00.994
Right, it was my first book.

00:22:00.994 --> 00:22:06.148
I had no idea about anything and I was kind of patting myself on the back for being so clueless.

00:22:06.148 --> 00:22:11.628
Because who wants to have that moment where you're like, wow, they didn't love it, I love it.

00:22:11.628 --> 00:22:12.771
Why didn't they love it?

00:22:12.771 --> 00:22:19.444
You know what, when you're starting in publishing, there's so many things that you are clueless about.

00:22:19.444 --> 00:22:28.873
And I look back on that and think I'm so grateful for that ignorance because I don't know, knowing everything, I know now how I would have been like yeah, I'm doing this because it's.

00:22:29.460 --> 00:22:37.567
There's many times where my husband, where I'm sitting there crying over something or I'm losing my mind, and he's like why do you do this?

00:22:37.567 --> 00:22:43.464
It doesn't seem like you're having a good time and publishing is hard.

00:22:43.464 --> 00:22:45.250
I can't, there's no time.

00:22:45.250 --> 00:22:49.067
That's another why we were talking about the importance of why earlier.

00:22:49.067 --> 00:22:49.891
That's a big one.

00:22:49.891 --> 00:22:51.405
Why are you doing this?

00:22:51.405 --> 00:22:52.746
What's your motivation?

00:22:53.839 --> 00:23:13.464
I'm sure he's looking at me like I literally one time, when I was going through the Ollie Oxley book deal phase and that one was about six months and I wasn't agented, I was like managing it myself and I was so stressed out I lost hair over it and I remember just sitting down on the kitchen floor and just crying.

00:23:13.464 --> 00:23:19.690
And I remember just sitting down on the kitchen floor and just crying and I was at home alone and all of a sudden my husband walked in and he's like oh, my God.

00:23:19.690 --> 00:23:21.871
And he's like what's going on?

00:23:21.871 --> 00:23:22.991
Are you OK?

00:23:22.991 --> 00:23:23.972
Are you bleeding?

00:23:23.972 --> 00:23:24.913
What's happening?

00:23:25.773 --> 00:23:29.156
It's just like so hard and I'm a very emotional person.

00:23:29.156 --> 00:23:36.003
As you know, you've had to deal with me the last six months, not just last six months.

00:23:36.003 --> 00:23:39.972
Last six months has been a little hard and poor bath has had to live through my torment.

00:23:39.972 --> 00:23:41.541
But now you're.

00:23:41.541 --> 00:23:47.449
Now you're in the now you're in the homestretch where you get to have fun and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

00:23:47.449 --> 00:23:52.222
So funny Cause I remember like at one time I was losing my mind about something.

00:23:52.403 --> 00:23:56.732
You were like you're an emotional teenager right now and I'm like you know what I am.

00:23:56.732 --> 00:24:02.332
That's me there to belittle your feelings whenever you want me to.

00:24:02.332 --> 00:24:05.267
You totally nailed it.

00:24:05.267 --> 00:24:06.584
I was just like I was.

00:24:06.584 --> 00:24:15.729
My emotions are out of control and I think it's just like when you're putting yourself out there and you want, you know you expect some consideration in return.

00:24:15.729 --> 00:24:20.796
It's just like when you're putting yourself out there and you want, you know you expect some consideration in return.

00:24:20.796 --> 00:24:21.356
It's high risk.

00:24:21.356 --> 00:24:23.259
Writing is high risk, is emotional.

00:24:23.259 --> 00:24:30.880
It's like walking the high wire for your emotions because you're putting them all on the page and then people say stuff like, eh, don't care, not very good, that's yeah, big stuff, big stuff.

00:24:31.259 --> 00:24:33.087
We were happy about the Kirkus review.

00:24:33.087 --> 00:24:34.078
That was good, that's good stuff.

00:24:34.078 --> 00:24:34.652
So we were happy about the Kirkus review.

00:24:34.652 --> 00:24:34.786
That was good.

00:24:34.786 --> 00:24:37.491
That was a great way to launch into your summer of book selling.

00:24:37.491 --> 00:24:41.602
So, speaking about summer, summer slumps, blah, blah, blah.

00:24:42.263 --> 00:24:52.127
We are going to be running a couple of encore editions of past episodes in June, twice, because we are on the road.

00:24:52.127 --> 00:24:53.771
I'm on the road, lisa's on the road.

00:24:53.771 --> 00:24:54.614
There's too much going on.

00:24:54.614 --> 00:24:59.913
We're just not able to get a guest in and do justice to them with this tight schedule.

00:24:59.913 --> 00:25:01.005
So look for those.

00:25:01.005 --> 00:25:04.691
We're going to pick two good ones that are worth hearing again.

00:25:05.661 --> 00:25:08.670
And don't forget to get ready for the challenge.

00:25:08.670 --> 00:25:10.548
That's going to be really fun.

00:25:10.548 --> 00:25:12.165
So I want you all to do it.

00:25:12.165 --> 00:25:21.724
Ah, and don't forget to tag, to hashtag and tag us and do all that kind of stuff so that we can give you kudos and support you and celebrate you.

00:25:21.724 --> 00:25:28.343
Hashtag, www platform challenge and we will have it on all of our feeds.

00:25:28.343 --> 00:25:31.210
So all you have to do is go find us if you forget what.

00:25:31.210 --> 00:25:32.861
It is, all right.

00:25:32.861 --> 00:25:35.809
So that's it for our sort of odds and ends episode today.

00:25:35.809 --> 00:25:41.892
So, listeners, please remember to visit our lovely website, writerswithwrinklesnet.

00:25:41.892 --> 00:25:43.404
We have lots of stuff there.

00:25:43.404 --> 00:25:48.030
There's a blog you can subscribe, you can follow, you can recommend.

00:25:48.030 --> 00:25:59.210
Next week will be the first of our Encore episodes, so tune in for that and until then, happy reading, writing and listening.

00:25:59.210 --> 00:26:01.515
Bye Lisa, bye guys.
